Alex Nguyen

Alexander Thanh Nguyen, M.D., MPH, is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and UC Riverside School of Medicine. He sees underserved veterans through the TeleMental Health program and teaches resident physicians in UCR’s Psychiatry Residency Program. He also works as an inpatient attending physician at the La Casa Mental Health Rehabilitation Center, a Long Beach subacute psychiatric facility serving individuals with severe mental illness. In 2014, Dr. Nguyen was one of 21 recipients nationwide to receive the American Medical Association’s Physicians of Tomorrow Award for his strong commitment to working with underserved and low-income populations. Inspired by his mother’s long battle with multiple sclerosis and witnessing her struggle with navigating the complex health care system, Dr. Nguyen advocates for easier access to resources and cost-effective care for patients. He sits on the CalOptima Board in the seat reserved for a family member of a CalOptima member. He completed his psychiatry residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and earned his master’s degree in public health from University of Southern California and medical degree from UC Davis. Dr. Nguyen was appointed a CalOptima Director in August 2016.
