CalOptima Health Awards $3.6 Million to Help Orange County Residents Maintain Medi-Cal Coverage Amid Eligibility Changes

Seven organizations selected to help members navigate the challenging enrollment process

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (July 1, 2026) — In response to significant federal and state changes affecting Medi-Cal eligibility and the renewal process, the CalOptima Health Board of Directors approved $3.6 million in grant funding to seven Orange County community-based organizations to expand enrollment and retention outreach.

“For many families, navigating the health care coverage enrollment process is already complicated. With some adult Medi-Cal members soon required to reapply twice a year, we do not want paperwork or administrative barriers to stand in the way of health care,” said Vicente Sarmiento, CalOptima Health Board Chair and Orange County Supervisor. “These grants will help community organizations provide the support members need to maintain their coverage, increase retention among eligible members and avoid unnecessary gaps in care.”

After a competitive review process, the following organizations were selected to receive grants:

  • Access California Services: $625,000
  • Council on Aging: $500,000
  • Family Health Matters: $500,000
  • Families Together of OC: $500,000
  • First 5 Orange County: $462,636
  • Providence Mission Hospital: $484,763
  • Vision y Compromiso: $500,000

“This grant strengthens our ability to reach families with young children, reduce barriers to enrollment, and connect them to the preventive care and developmental services that help children thrive,” said Kim Goll, President/Chief Executive Officer, First 5 Orange County. “We are grateful to CalOptima Health for its continued partnership and shared commitment to improving the health of Orange County’s youngest residents and their families.”

Vision y Compromiso’s CalAIM Services Program Director Carol Malo added: “This investment helps ensure our communities are not left behind by expanding access to Medi-Cal through trusted promotoras who bring culturally grounded support and advocacy directly to families.”
